ABOUT THE PLACE-
The Golden Temple, the pious abode of the sikh community and people from all walks of life. The Swarm mandir or the Harmandir Sahib is the most important gurudwara in the country. It has been a symbol of peace and brotherhood since the time it was the meditation retreat of Guru Nanak, Lord Buddha, and other Sikh disciples. If you are not a keen religious person, it is a must visit place for the beauty of its architecture.
The Swarn mandir is a majestic witness to both Sikh and Muslim architecture.The four doors of the shrine are symbolic as they open in all directions, inviting people from all caste and religion. The reason Hari mandir is also known as the ‘Golden’ temple is because of the golden embellishment , breathtaking marble sculptures and precious stones on display.
When you visit Sri Harmandir Sahib, you will be amazed at its enormous area. A marble path leads you to the Mandir, surrounded by the sacred Amrit Sarovar. Pilgrims believe in taking a dip in this holy water and cleansing their soul. Post Darshan, visit the langar area or the kitchen and contribute if you want in their daily services. The other place of interests are Monument of Victory of Sikhs on Delhi, Central Sikh Museum, Ramgaria Bunga, Ath Sath Tirath, Dukh Bhanjani Beri, Gurudwara Bibi Kaulan Ji, Nishan Sahib Miri Piri and Gurudwara Thara Sahib Ji.
Amritsar is well connected via road, train and air.
By Road– If you are planning a trip with your friends, a long drive on the Grand Trunk Karnal Road will be ideal. The I.S.B.T has regular bus services connecting Amritsar to Jammu, Katra, Dharamshala and Chandigarh. Do check with your hotel for availability of parking for your vehicle.
By Train– Perfect for family vacation, pre-book your rail tickets and you are set to go. Amritsar is well connected to most major cities. The nearest station to the Golden temple is the Amritsar Junction, which is 2 kms away. Speak to your hotel for pick ups or you can avail an auto rickshaw for Rs.75 to 100.
By Air – Sri Guru Ram Das Jee airport also known as the Raja Sansi International Airport is the nearest airport from the temple. Daily domestic flights are available at affordable prices and the number of international flights are on the increase. Though just 13 kms away, prefer booking a prepaid taxi or ola cab to reach on time. Find out the rates priorly to avoid getting fooled.
FACILITIES AVAILABLE IN THE TEMPLE – Once in the premises, you need to take care you don’t disturb the routine there. The usual timings are 2:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on all days.The door of the temple opens at 2:30 a.m. and the First hukamnama is at 5:00 a.m. The temple is closed with the departure of the Palki Sahib from Sri Harimandir Sahib. Post your darshan, head to the Langar hall which is open all the time and enjoy how people of all statuses offer daily services. There is a free bus facility for the airport, railway station and bus stand. Clean bathrooms and free dispensaries are also available.
